Apple Maps will be built into Ford's next universal EV platform

Apple and Ford have announced a deeper in-car software partnership that will put Apple Maps directly inside Ford's upcoming Universal Electric Vehicle platform, rather than relying only on phone projection through CarPlay. The companies said on July 23 that the integration will use Apple's new MapKit for Automotive SDK and is planned for Ford's UEV Platform in 2027.

The move is notable because it makes Apple Maps part of the vehicle's own navigation layer. Ford says drivers will get turn-by-turn directions using natural language, real-time traffic and incident information, place search with detailed cards, and routing options designed to help choose efficient routes. For electric vehicles, the system is also expected to support intelligent EV routing, including battery preconditioning before a charging stop.

Why It Matters

Built-in mapping has become a strategic piece of the connected-car stack. Automakers want navigation that can communicate with battery management, charging plans, driver-assistance features, fleet tools and vehicle settings. Apple wants its services to reach beyond the phone while preserving a familiar software experience for drivers. Ford's decision gives Apple a first high-profile automotive partner for MapKit for Automotive, while Ford gets a mapping interface that can be customized for its own displays and vehicle software.

The companies also tied the mapping deal to driver assistance. Ford will use road-level information from Apple Maps while developing its next-generation BlueCruise hands-free highway system. Ford's own Latitude AI team remains responsible for the automaker's advanced driving technology, but better embedded map data could help smooth highway transitions such as on-ramps and off-ramps.
