DuckDuckGo is seeing a strong rise in user interest after Google’s latest AI-focused Search redesign triggered backlash from people who prefer a more traditional search experience. Reports say visits to DuckDuckGo’s No AI search page more than tripled after Google’s May 19 I/O 2026 announcements, with traffic remaining well above normal levels in the following days.
The shift appears to be more than a temporary spike. DuckDuckGo also reported a sustained increase in U.S. app installs, with especially strong growth on iOS, suggesting that some users are actively seeking alternatives to Google’s new AI-heavy interface.
At the center of the reaction is Google’s broader move away from classic blue-link search results toward an AI-driven experience built around conversational answers, interactive tools, and multimodal input. While Google still offers a “Web” filter for link-only results, DuckDuckGo is benefiting from users who want a simpler search product with fewer AI elements by default.
As Google pushes deeper into AI-powered search, the bigger question may be whether users truly want smarter answers or simply the freedom to search the web on their own terms.
