GitHub is adding xAI's Grok 4.6 to GitHub Copilot, giving developers another selectable reasoning model for coding sessions that involve agentic work, terminal commands and longer multi-step tasks. The company announced the rollout on August 14 and framed the model as a fit for complex coding workflows rather than a simple autocomplete upgrade.

What changes for developers

According to GitHub, Grok 4.6 is rolling out across Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business and Enterprise plans. It will appear in the model picker for Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot cloud agent, the Copilot app, JetBrains IDEs, Xcode and Eclipse. The rollout is gradual, so teams may not see the option immediately.

The operational detail that matters most is governance. Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise administrators must explicitly enable the Grok 4.6 policy in Copilot settings, and GitHub says that policy is off by default. That gives organizations a review point before a new third-party model enters engineering workflows that may touch proprietary code, build logs or issue context.

Pricing and practical impact

GitHub says Grok 4.6 is billed at provider list pricing under usage-based billing. Its model-pricing documentation lists Grok 4.6 as generally available in the versatile category, with default pricing of $2.00 per 1 million input tokens, $0.50 per 1 million cached input tokens and $6.00 per 1 million output tokens for workloads at or below the 200K-token threshold. The long-context tier above 200K tokens is listed at $4.00 input, $1.00 cached input and $12.00 output per 1 million tokens.

For developers, the addition is less about brand choice and more about model routing. Teams using Copilot for refactors, build-failure diagnosis or agent sessions can compare Grok 4.6 against existing OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Microsoft and other Copilot models on the same repositories and tools. One likely effect is more deliberate model selection: cheaper lightweight models can remain the default for routine questions, while teams reserve pricier reasoning models for work where sustained context and tool use justify the cost.

GitHub says its internal testing showed strong results on terminal-based coding tasks in VS Code and Copilot CLI, especially longer-horizon jobs. It remains unclear how those results translate across large private codebases, so organizations should treat the rollout as a measurable option: enable it for a limited group, track AI-credit use, compare task completion quality and expand only when the productivity gain is visible.
