Google Cloud introduces Gemini agent for enterprise work across apps and code
Google Cloud introduced Gemini agent, an enterprise AI agent for Workspace, coding, data tasks, governance and cost controls.
Google Cloud used Gemini at Work 2026 to introduce Gemini agent, a single enterprise AI agent designed to work across business documents, inboxes, developer tools, data systems and third-party applications. The company says the agent can answer questions, create content, write and run code, call tools, use skills and keep working on longer tasks after a user closes a laptop.
The launch matters because Google is packaging agentic AI less as a chat feature and more as managed workplace infrastructure. According to Google Cloud, Gemini agent can operate from web, iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, command line, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Slack. It can also run as a headless agent inside other applications. That broad surface area is useful only if controls follow the agent, so Google is emphasizing identity, access policy, audit trails, sandboxing and an Agent Gateway that acts as a policy enforcement layer for network traffic.
What changes for enterprise teams
Inside Workspace, Google says Gemini can work directly in Gmail, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Chat and Calendar while carrying the same memory, skills and controls. A user could delegate a task that spans mail, documents and spreadsheets without restating the context in every app. Teams can also create coworker agents with their own Workspace accounts, email addresses, calendars and directory presence, so their actions appear under the agent identity rather than a human user.
Google also announced domain-specific data and analytics skills. Technical teams can ask for outcomes in plain language and have Gemini generate PySpark code, create notebooks, train models and troubleshoot pipelines. Business users can generate operational reports through BigQuery and Knowledge Catalog, then save those queries for repeat use without new token spending each time. Google says Bloomberg Media improved SQL query accuracy by 63% during initial development by grounding AI in its institutional context.
Why readers should watch the rollout
Google is presenting strong adoption signals, including its claim that nearly 80% of Google Cloud customers use its AI products and nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise. It also cites customers such as BNP Paribas, Orange Spain, Santee Cooper and Wesfarmers using Gemini Enterprise for workflows from credit memos to grid planning.
The practical test is whether governance keeps pace with delegation. Agent identities, spend caps and sandboxing are the right vocabulary for enterprise buyers, but organizations will still need to decide which systems an agent can touch, how much autonomy it gets and when a human must approve the final step. For now, Gemini agent looks like Google Cloud’s clearest attempt to turn workplace AI from a collection of assistants into a controlled operating layer for everyday business work.
