OpenAI said it will test a new visual advertising format in ChatGPT during image generation, starting later in October in the United States with an initial group of advertisers. The company says the ads will be clearly labeled, kept separate from the image a user is creating, and will not influence ChatGPT's answers.

The move matters because it turns ChatGPT's ad business from a small placement experiment into a more complete commercial system. OpenAI says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week, which gives the company a large consumer surface for paid discovery. The new format is designed for images that show product inspiration, product usage, or experiences tied to a product or service.

What is changing

The ad format is only one part of the announcement. OpenAI is also expanding measurement and attribution tools so advertisers can connect ChatGPT campaigns to systems they already use. The company named Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp for conversion data integrations, and listed attribution partners including AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge, and Tenjin.

OpenAI also said it is working with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic on early geo based incrementality experiments. That detail is important for advertisers because attribution can show which ad received credit for a sale, while incrementality tries to estimate whether the sale happened because the ad ran. The company framed that work as early, so buyers should treat campaign reports as useful signals rather than final proof of causal impact.

Why users should care

For everyday ChatGPT users, the practical question is whether paid placements remain visibly separate from assistant help. OpenAI says advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides, and that placement guardrails are meant to keep ads out of emotionally vulnerable, sensitive, or unsuitable contexts. It also says automated review, human oversight, and monitoring will support policy enforcement.

The strongest near term test is not whether the first image ads look polished. It is whether people can tell when they are seeing an ad, why it appeared, and whether the assistant's recommendation layer feels independent. In a search engine, a sponsored result sits beside other results. In an assistant, trust depends on the user believing the answer is not quietly shaped by payment.

  • Testing starts later this month in the US with selected advertisers.
  • Ads are planned first around image generation rather than all ChatGPT conversations.
  • OpenAI is developing brand suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science without giving those partners access to private conversations.

CyberOGZ's read: this is the beginning of a more measurable AI advertising market, but the burden of proof shifts to transparency. Advertisers will want conversion plumbing and brand safety checks. Users will need clear boundaries that make commercial content obvious before ChatGPT becomes a shopping companion by default.
