GitHub adds comment-triggered Copilot automations and reasoning controls

GitHub is giving Copilot cloud agent two new controls that make the coding assistant behave more like an automated teammate inside normal development workflows. In changelog posts dated August 3, GitHub said users can now start Copilot cloud agent automations from issue comments and pull request comments, and can also choose a model reasoning level when launching supported agent tasks.

The comment-trigger feature is the more operational change. GitHub says teams can create Copilot cloud agent automations that run when a new issue comment or pull request comment is created. The company lists documentation generation and pull request follow-up work as examples, but the bigger implication is that agent tasks can be tied to conversation events instead of only manual launches or separate tooling. For teams already using GitHub Issues and pull requests as their work queue, that can reduce the gap between a review comment, an assigned follow-up, and a generated code or documentation change.

More control over agent cost and depth

The second update adds a reasoning-level selector for Copilot cloud agent runs when the chosen model supports it. GitHub describes the control as a way to decide how much reasoning the model performs before responding. Higher reasoning can help with more complex tasks, but GitHub also notes that it consumes more tokens and therefore more credits. That framing matters for business and enterprise customers trying to balance agent quality against predictable AI spending.

GitHub says reasoning controls are available on paid Copilot plans that include Copilot cloud agent: Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, Enterprise and Max. The comment-triggered automation update also lands in the same product area, signaling that GitHub is pushing Copilot beyond interactive code suggestions and into configurable background work.

Why it matters

For developers, the update is not a new foundation model or a dramatic interface redesign. Its significance is workflow integration. Pull requests already contain the context, reviewer intent and acceptance criteria for many engineering tasks. Letting comments trigger an automation gives teams a native way to ask an agent to make a narrowly scoped change, generate supporting material or handle repeatable maintenance without leaving GitHub.
