Google Adds Ask Gemini Command Line to Google Chat for Workspace Collaboration
Google Workspace users gain Ask Gemini in Chat starting August 26, 2026, with search, content generation, and task management features inside Google Chat.
Google announced on August 19, 2026, that starting August 26 users of Google Workspace will gain direct access to Gemini AI capabilities inside Google Chat through a new "Ask Gemini in Chat" feature. The rollout begins with a gradual deployment across Rapid and Scheduled Release domains, reaching full visibility within 15 days.
What the integration provides
The feature acts as a unified command line accessible from the Shortcuts menu or via keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + G on Windows/ChromeOS or Command + G on macOS). It lets users search across Gmail, Drive, and Calendar data without leaving the conversation, generate images or draft updates, summarize ongoing discussions, capture action items, schedule meetings, and manage tasks. Conversations can be organized into individual sessions for later reference.
Google states this reduces time spent toggling between tabs and searching for information during team collaboration. The previous Gemini side panel in Chat is being retired as part of the launch; its functions move into the new Ask Gemini surface. Conversation history from the old panel does not migrate automatically, though admins retain export options.
Availability and rollout details
- Available to Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus customers, plus Google AI Pro for Education add-ons.
- Requires enrollment in Workspace Smart Features and appropriate admin controls for Gemini in Workspace and Workspace Intelligence.
- English-language accounts receive the update first; additional languages are planned.
- Promotional higher usage limits apply through October 1, 2026, after which standard limits take effect.
One likely effect is improved flow for distributed teams that already rely on Google Chat as their primary collaboration hub, though it remains unclear whether the post-promo limits will constrain power users who previously benefited from the side panel.
What to watch
Administrators should verify that Workspace Intelligence and Smart Features are enabled before the August 26 start date. End users will see Ask Gemini listed under Shortcuts once the feature activates. Organizations evaluating broader Gemini adoption in Workspace can use the promotional window to test real-world usage patterns in team settings.
