Intel and Fortinet team up on next-generation SP6 security processor

Intel and Fortinet have announced a strategic collaboration to develop Fortinet Security Processor 6, a next-generation custom chip intended for enterprise security appliances and services. The July 21 announcement positions the work as both a product roadmap move for Fortinet and a supply-chain win for Intel's manufacturing ambitions.

Fortinet says its purpose-built security processors have been central to its FortiGate firewall strategy for more than two decades, letting the company tune packet inspection, encryption, networking, and security workloads for dedicated hardware instead of relying only on general-purpose CPUs. The new SP6 effort extends that approach at a time when security infrastructure is being asked to inspect more traffic, run richer threat-detection services, and support AI-enabled defenses without creating new bottlenecks.

The partnership combines Fortinet's ASIC design experience with Intel's semiconductor design, packaging, and manufacturing capabilities. Intel says the collaboration is meant to accelerate and strengthen SP6 development while improving the resilience and diversity of Fortinet's global supply chain.
