Meta AI adds planning, app connections and recurring task features

Meta is turning its Meta AI assistant from a chat-only product into a more active agent for planning, research and recurring updates. In a July 24 newsroom post, the company said new Meta AI features powered by Muse Spark 1.1 can make plans, connect to email and calendar apps, create slide decks and handle tasks that users set up once and expect the assistant to continue.

The rollout starts in select markets in the Meta AI app and at meta.ai, with Meta saying broader availability across more countries and surfaces, including WhatsApp, will follow in the coming weeks. The company is positioning the update as a step toward an assistant that can maintain context and complete multi-step work, not just answer a prompt in a single session.

What Is Changing

Meta described examples that move the assistant closer to a personal operations layer. A user could ask it to plan a kitchen renovation, scout Facebook Marketplace for furniture and fixtures within a budget, then prepare a mood board. Another example has Meta AI creating a half-marathon training plan, adjusting around the user's availability and sending a weekly plan every Monday. Meta also said the assistant can help plan a birthday dinner by checking a calendar and suggesting restaurants.

The more important shift is persistence. Meta says users can set up recurring tasks such as a daily briefing, weekly meal plan, shopping alert or trend update. The daily briefing can pull from a calendar, flag double bookings or changed plans, and deliver a summary at a preferred time. For research tasks, Meta says the assistant can gather information from the web, research papers and content shared across Meta apps, then turn findings into slides.

The announcement also raises the stakes for trust and permissions. Connecting an AI assistant to calendars, email and shopping flows can make it more useful, but it also requires clearer controls over what data the assistant can access and which actions need approval. Meta referenced private incognito chats as one option, but the broader test will be whether users understand when Meta AI is merely suggesting next steps and when it is acting across connected services on their behalf.
