OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate less than 200 days after launch, turning advertising from a pilot into a central part of the company’s consumer business. The company also said self-service buying through Ads Manager is expanding later today across India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

The announcement matters because it clarifies how OpenAI plans to keep a large free ChatGPT audience funded while it sells subscriptions, enterprise seats and API usage. OpenAI says the free tier now helps keep ChatGPT available to more than 1 billion weekly active users. Advertising gives the company another revenue channel, but it also places commercial messages inside a product many people use for research, planning and purchase decisions.

What changes for advertisers

OpenAI says ChatGPT Ads are available in more than 40 countries through its ads solutions team, agencies and technology partners. The newer self-service route is meant to make the platform easier for smaller companies to use, not just major brands with managed sales relationships. The company also said it has more than 50 technology and measurement partners, with product feeds, geographic targeting, custom audiences, CPC bidding and outcome-optimized bidding now part of the ad stack.

Those details point to a practical shift. ChatGPT advertising is moving from experimental inventory toward the kind of performance-marketing system buyers can compare with search and social campaigns. OpenAI cited examples including an ecommerce advertiser that saw a 3x return on ad spend over 28 days and a technology partner reporting that more than 80% of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic came from new customers. Those are company-selected examples, so marketers should treat them as signals to test rather than benchmarks to assume.

Trust is the boundary to watch

OpenAI says ads in ChatGPT are clearly labeled, separate from answers, and do not influence the responses ChatGPT provides. It also says advertisers do not get access to private conversations, and that users can control how their ad experience is personalized. The important CyberOGZ read is that these safeguards will decide whether conversational advertising becomes useful or intrusive.

For users, the immediate change is not that every answer becomes an ad. The bigger issue is context. OpenAI says its ad system can use the current conversation, and depending on country and settings, broader ChatGPT activity, to show relevant ads. That can make recommendations more timely, but it also makes privacy controls and labeling more important than they are in a conventional search results page. Businesses testing the channel should measure incremental demand, not just clicks, while users should review personalization settings as the rollout reaches more regions.
