Apple Unveils iOS 27: Liquid Glass Updates and New AI Tools
Apple announced iOS 27 at WWDC 2026, focusing on system stability, Liquid Glass UI refinements, and massive Apple Intelligence upgrades for modern iPhones.
At the WWDC 2026 keynote on June 8, Apple officially introduced iOS 27. Echoing the philosophy of the classic Mac OS X Snow Leopard release, this year's iPhone software update prioritizes underlying performance stability, bug fixes, and battery life, alongside highly anticipated refinements to the user interface and artificial intelligence.
Refining the Liquid Glass Aesthetic
Apple has actively responded to user feedback regarding the "Liquid Glass" design language introduced in iOS 26. In iOS 27, the translucent interface offers far more granular control to reduce visual clutter:
User Control: A new system-wide slider lets users manually adjust the transparency of Liquid Glass elements, scaling from ultra-clear to fully tinted.
App Icons & Navigation: Liquid Glass elements are now layered directly into app icons for a sharper appearance. Additionally, Apple is reversing previous design choices by recombining the search button with navigation tabs in native apps like Podcasts, TV, and Music.
The New Siri and Apple Intelligence
Artificial intelligence serves as a major pillar of the new OS, bringing significant upgrades to the user experience—provided you have the right hardware.
Siri Overhaul: Siri receives its biggest update yet, featuring a standalone app with a ChatGPT-style interface and system-wide "Ask Siri" buttons. The assistant now leverages personal context, onscreen awareness, and deep integration with native apps. Note: Due to regulatory hurdles, Siri AI will not be available initially in the European Union.
App Integrations: Apple Intelligence is expanding into the Photos app with tools like Extend, Enhance, and Reframe. Safari will utilize AI to automatically name Tab Groups, and the Image Playground app has been completely redesigned with upgraded generation models.
Core App Updates and Customization
Deep customization is a recurring theme across iOS 27's core applications. The Camera app interface is now fully customizable, allowing users to pin specific control widgets such as resolution or flash settings to the top of the screen. Safari introduces a redesigned start page with four distinct tabs for easier browsing, while the Weather app consolidates its data into a unified "Conditions" section on the main page. Furthermore, the Health app will introduce AI-powered wellness coaching paired with educational videos from physicians.
Device Compatibility Details
While the advanced Apple Intelligence features will remain firmly exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro series and newer devices, baseline iOS 27 compatibility remains slightly ambiguous. Conflicting reports suggest Apple may drop support for the iPhone 11 and 2nd-generation iPhone SE (setting the iPhone 12 series as the new baseline), though some sources claim all devices capable of running iOS 26 will receive the update.
