Google reshuffles DeepMind leadership as Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat start Discovery Loop

Google has reorganized the top of its AI operation, moving Demis Hassabis into a broader strategic role while two of the company’s best-known infrastructure and AI veterans prepare to build a new research-focused public benefit corporation.

In a message published by Google on August 5, CEO Sundar Pichai said Hassabis will become chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. Koray Kavukcuoglu, currently Google DeepMind’s chief technology officer and Google’s chief AI architect, will step up as senior vice president of Google DeepMind, reporting to Pichai. Google said Kavukcuoglu will oversee Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and Gemini app and developer teams.

The shift separates day-to-day model execution from Alphabet’s longer-range AGI and science agenda at a moment when Google is under pressure to turn its research base into products, infrastructure wins, and developer adoption. Pichai’s note points to demand for Flash, the company’s Cyber model, and more than 900 million Gemma downloads as signs of momentum, while Hassabis said the Gemini app had surpassed 950 million monthly users.

The same announcement also confirms that Jeff Dean and Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat are launching an independent public benefit corporation focused on accelerating discoveries in machine learning, science, and engineering. Google said it will remain involved as a founding investor and cloud partner and will collaborate with the new company on ML systems and related infrastructure research.

TechCrunch reported that the venture is called Discovery Loop and that other senior AI researchers, including Quoc Le and Oriol Vinyals, are involved as co-founders. According to that report, the company’s initial funding round is co-led by Radical Ventures and Khosla Ventures, with Kleiner Perkins, Lightspeed, Doerr Capital, and Alphabet participating.

For the broader AI industry, the move is notable because it puts several researchers associated with Google’s foundational AI and distributed-systems work into a separate organization aimed at automating experimentation itself. That is a different emphasis from consumer chatbots or enterprise copilots: the pitch is to use large-scale computation to run more experimental loops in parallel, potentially speeding up model design, engineering workflows, and scientific research.
