
LG Display FLiPP OLED process promises brighter panels without fine metal masks
LG Display says FLiPP OLED panels can be brighter, longer-lasting, and more efficient, but product timing remains open.
LG Display has unveiled FLiPP, an OLED manufacturing method that removes the fine metal mask process long used to pattern red, green, and blue subpixels. The company announced the technology around IMID 2026 in Busan and says the change could make future OLED panels brighter, longer-lived, and less power hungry while giving factories more flexibility over screen size and resolution.
The practical headline is simple: FLiPP is not a new TV or monitor you can buy this week, but it could change the display choices buyers see in the next product cycle. LG Display says panels made under identical conditions can reach 1.6 times higher brightness, 2.4 times longer lifespan, and 13 percent lower power consumption than panels made with fine metal masks. It attributes the improvement to an aperture ratio gain of about 55 percent, meaning more of the display area can actively emit light.
Fine metal masks work like precision stencils, but they become expensive and difficult to align as panel sizes and resolutions change. LG Display says the conventional process can require large mother glass substrates to be divided because mask size is limited. FLiPP instead coats RGB pixels in sequence, fixes them in position, and uses photolithography with UV light to remove unnecessary areas during OLED pixel patterning.
What buyers should watch

One likely effect, if LG Display scales the process as claimed, is more competition in premium OLED categories where brightness, burn-in anxiety, and large-screen manufacturing cost still shape purchasing decisions.
