Microsoft will turn on Windows settings backup by default for eligible Windows 11 26H2 devices

Microsoft is preparing to make Windows settings backup a default-on resilience feature for eligible managed Windows 11 devices, changing a recovery capability that has typically required administrator enablement into a baseline part of the operating system experience.

The company said the change is available first to Windows Insiders and is planned for general availability with Windows 11, version 26H2. Under the new default, eligible devices will back up recoverable Windows settings and a list of Microsoft Store apps unless an administrator has explicitly configured the policy another way. Microsoft emphasized that explicit enablement and explicit disablement settings remain authoritative, so organizations that have already made a policy decision should not see that decision overwritten.

What Changes

The shift affects Windows settings backup and restore, previously called Windows Backup for Organizations. The goal is to make device replacement, reset, and recovery less dependent on manual configuration, especially in environments where IT teams want users to regain familiar settings and app lists after a disruption. Microsoft described the restored app list as covering Microsoft Store apps, while restore behavior itself remains controlled by administrators rather than being automatically enabled by the backup default.

For IT teams, the detail that matters is governance. Microsoft says administrators can continue to manage the behavior through Microsoft Intune, Group Policy, or other mobile device management tools. That keeps the feature in the same policy universe as other Windows management choices, while raising the default level of resilience for tenants that have not set a preference.

Why It Matters

Windows device recovery is increasingly tied to business continuity. A default backup of settings and Store app inventory does not replace endpoint backup, file protection, or application deployment tooling, but it can reduce some friction when users receive a replacement PC or recover after a reset. The change also fits Microsoft's broader Windows management direction: making cloud-backed recovery and update resilience more visible to administrators while leaving enterprise controls in place.

The rollout is not immediate for all production systems. Microsoft listed the policy change in the Windows message center on July 6, 2026, and the detailed Windows IT Pro Blog post was published the same day. Organizations that manage Windows fleets should use the Insider phase to review how the default interacts with existing Intune, Group Policy, and MDM baselines before Windows 11 26H2 reaches general availability.
