
Google commits $40 million in AI and cloud credits to DOE's Genesis Mission
Google pledged $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits for DOE Genesis Mission researchers and national labs.
Google is putting more of its AI stack behind the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, announcing a $40 million in-kind commitment of AI tokens and Google Cloud credits for researchers working on the federal AI-for-science program.
The company said the new support was announced on July 22 at the DOE Genesis Mission Summit 2026. Google framed the contribution as an expansion of earlier work with the department, including access for DOE National Laboratories to Google DeepMind tools and a role for Gemini for Government as a secure platform for agency research and operations.
What Researchers Get
Google says Genesis Mission awardees will receive access to parts of Google DeepMind's science portfolio. The list includes AlphaEvolve for algorithm design, AlphaFold 3 for biomolecular structure and interaction prediction, AlphaGenome for studying how DNA variation affects biology and disease, WeatherNext for weather modeling, and AlphaEarth Foundations for planetary mapping.
The commitment also includes one year of Gemini for Government seats and tokens for tens of thousands of users across DOE National Laboratory research, management, and operations teams. That makes the announcement less about one model release and more about supplying compute, model access, and managed AI tooling to a large scientific workforce.
DOE separately said the Genesis Mission has now secured more than $800 million in committed partner support through its consortium. According to the department, those commitments include compute resources and credits, access to foundation models, cloud infrastructure, scientific expertise, research partnerships, and direct funding. The consortium currently spans all 17 DOE National Laboratories, five National Nuclear Security Administration plants and sites, and 41 industry, nonprofit, and philanthropic organizations.
Why It Matters
The Genesis Mission aims to use AI systems, national lab datasets, supercomputers, and experimental facilities to accelerate work in energy, discovery science, and national security. Google's contribution is notable because it bundles several mature AI-for-science systems with cloud capacity, rather than offering only a single research grant or product trial.
Google's post cites early examples from the lab ecosystem, including use of AlphaEvolve for complex mathematical search and Gemini-assisted instrument workflows that reduced microscope calibration time in a materials research setting. Those examples remain company- and partner-reported, but they show the kind of practical automation the mission is trying to scale: not replacing laboratories, but shortening the loop between data, modeling, experiment setup, and scientific decision-making.
